Why Brent should become an Age Friendly Community

The Forum is collaborating with the Council and volunteer organisations to initiate the process of establishing Brent as an Age-Friendly Community. This partnership aims to create a supportive environment where older residents can thrive, ensuring that the borough's policies and services effectively meet their needs.

Brent's transformation into an Age-Friendly Community is crucial for fostering a supportive, inclusive, and accessible environment for its aging population. This initiative, guided by the World Health Organization’s framework for Age-Friendly Cities, would focus on enhancing eight key areas of urban living: outdoor spaces, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication, and community support and health services.

Implementing age-friendly policies can significantly improve the quality of life for older residents. By developing accessible public spaces and transportation, Brent can ensure that elderly citizens can move safely and confidently within their community. Improved housing policies can provide secure, appropriate, and affordable housing tailored to the needs of the elderly. Furthermore, promoting social and civic engagement can help combat isolation and empower older individuals to contribute their valuable experience and knowledge to community life.

Moreover, an Age-Friendly Brent would benefit all generations, creating a ripple effect of social cohesion and mutual respect. It will encourage intergenerational activities that can lead to shared understanding and collaboration between young and old. This holistic approach not only enhances the lives of the elderly but strengthens the community fabric, making Brent a more liveable, caring, and vibrant place for everyone.
